You’re Not a Fascist: Words Have Meaning & It Matters
AmericanMom Team |
People will really just say anything these days. And it’s so strange because, more often than not, they clearly don’t have a single clue what they are saying. Nor do they acknowledge that the words they say have real, applicable, historical meaning and it completely matters. Their words simply come from a place of fear and misguided intellectualism that has left them void of any real understanding of the world around them. So, good news, you’re not a Fascist.
Words have Meaning & It Matters
We could probably just use the photo and not say anything else. But we want to add a note about why the meaning of words matters.
Meaning matters because when you strip a word of its true meaning and water it down, it becomes really hard to recognize when that word is being used in reference to an actual instance of its true meaning. When everyone is labeled as racist, it’s hard to see the real instances of racism.
It’s also important to understand meaning in relation to free speech. We are blessed with this right, granted by God, and upheld in our Constitution. When we use words as labels (racist, fascist, satanic, etc.) simply to silence, demonize, and destroy the life of people we don’t agree with then we are not engaging in true free speech. Conversations and disagreement are vital to free speech as well as a free nation.
Finally, a world of confusion and declining intelligence results from the misuse of words. They have meaning and history, those meanings matter, and when we muddle the waters with incorrect words and confusing speech we insult and erase thousands of years of language development and create generations of people who have no clue what they are saying or the damage they are causing.
Fascist/Fascism
Google is going to be mad that we even used these words. But everyone else does, so we will too. The Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (National Socialist German Workers’ Party), or Nazi party, came into power the usual way: slowly and gradually. And then there was a storm. There is no doubt in the minds of most that the rule of this party was bloody, corrupt, aggressive, misguided, and filled with horrors. There were a thousand and one factors that played into the rise of the party, the installment of one of the most hated rulers in the world, and the war that followed. And, somehow, that has been stripped down quite a bit – not distilled, but watered down. Now, anyone who voices an opinion in opposition to the Left is labeled a Nazi.
The irony is real here since there is nothing in common between America’s current right-wing majority and the Nazi party of the 20th century. The two are actually at odds completely; one wanted complete government control, the other wants less government; one devalued life to justify death, the other has been fighting for decades to humanize the most innocent; so on and so forth.
Coincidentally, the confusion here is that those claiming people are Nazis do not understand the meaning of that word or the fundamentals of that party. They have no idea, all they know is that historically the Nazis were shoved to the Right of the political spectrum (despite their Socialist foundations) and that they were bad.
They/Them
We are so sick of the word, but we have to say it: pronouns. The battle continues for the salvation of the English language, and I’m not sure who is winning. The claim here is two-fold: 1) “people have been trans since the dawn of time/there are two-spirited people in tribes”; and 2) “we already use they/them to refer to a single person in our everyday language so it, therefore, is correct.”
Sure and sure. But also, wrong.
Maybe there have been people since the dawn of time that have believed themselves to be in the wrong body and “trans” to some degree. Does that mean they are correct? No. Clearly, a man cannot become a woman and a woman cannot become a man. We know this to be TRUE. Have there been men in the past who were left behind in the village with the women and children while the rest of the men and boys went off to hunt? Probably, sometimes men are bad at things and put the rest of society at risk — they are left behind because they are too much of a liability, not because they are actually a woman or two-spirited.
The second argument is that we already use they/them to refer to a single person. And this is true; colloquially we absolutely do this. And typically under two circumstances. The first is when it is incredibly unrelated to the story whether or not the person you are talking about is a man or a woman. For example: “I went to the doctors today and they gave me a prescription for antibiotics.” Arguably, the prescription for antibiotics is the true subject and point of this sentence, it really doesn’t matter (colloquially) whether the doctor you saw was a woman or man. To be good storytellers, we tend to leave out unimportant details in order to not bog down the story and get to the real point.
Secondly, colloquially, we incorrectly say they/them when we genuinely don’t know. For example: Person 1 says “I was talking to my doctor about my skin condition.” Person 2 says ‘Oh really? What did they say?” In this case, Person 2 doesn’t know if the doctor is a man or a woman (and it doesn’t matter to the story) so they casually use they. The formal, correct thing to do is so say “Oh really? What did he say?”
The ultimate point being this: we do this colloquially (adverb: in the language of ordinary or familiar conversation; informally) which is not the formal or correct use of the English language and its rules. Nearly every language has this informal form and approach. English gets in trouble a bit more though because, unlike languages like Spanish, we do not have male and female verbs/adjectives/etc. so we have to wade through muddy waters to preserve the truth.
Democracy
How many people are sick of hearing this word used by the mainstream media? Raise your hands. We see you, and we agree. If you didn’t know, America is not a Democracy, we are a Constitutional Federal Republic with a voting system that focuses on equality and representation among the states, not mob or majority rule.
To quote the U.S. Embassy in Argentina: “Constitutional” refers to the fact that government in the United States is based on a Constitution which is the supreme law of the United States. The Constitution not only provides the framework for how the federal and state governments are structured, but also places significant limits on their powers. “Federal” means that there is both a national government and governments of the 50 states. A “republic” is a form of government in which the people hold power, but elect representatives to exercise that power.”
The constant use of the word Democracy has numbed us to the fact that we are not a democracy. It has misled entire generations of Americans who now think that we must serve democracy and not the actual political foundations and format of our country. The Founding Fathers were not on board with majority rule, they did not favor tyranny from governing forces, and they wanted balance of power in everything. They understood what happens to the unarmed little guy so they set up the Electoral College, regular elections, and a system of government that doesn’t even include democracy in its name.
Refocus on the Republic for which the flag stands and make America America again!
Mother
You know we couldn’t do an article about words having meaning without mentioning moms. One of the greatest sins of this current society is their attempt to erase moms and replace the words mom, mother, motherhood, etc. with “birthing person”, “person in possession of a uterus”, and “sperm recipient”.
Moms, their role as mothers, the caregivers among us are so incredibly vital to our society. Their feminine energy, womanly instincts, wisdom, softness, strength, and emotional yin to the masculinity’s yang (thank you Evie for mentioning this) are essential to the healthy development of children. It creates well-rounded adults with emotional intelligence, heart, warmth, and soul. To belittle, mock, or erase it is to plunge the world, future generations, into chaos and darkness.
The true meaning of the words mom, mother, and motherhood are hard to explain, but we all instinctively know what it is to have a loving and supportive mom in our lives. We all, deep in our souls, understand what it means to be a good mom. Something that deep cannot and will not be exhumed and mocked for the sake of appeasing those who reject truth.
Racist
Identifying racism is important. We will not deny the harm, hurt, and bloodshed that racism has caused throughout history. Today, this word is applied to everything. And we mean everything. It seems you cannot talk about anything these days without race coming into it, and if you say anything against anyone with darker skin (even if what they did was objectively reprehensible) you are labeled racist.
This is another word that has become so watered down that it is quickly losing meaning. Which is a big problem when it comes to true cases of actual racism around us. Racists exist, but they are not everywhere, they are not the majority, and talking about facts, statistics, and anecdotal experiences does not make you racist.
Racism is clear hatred and bias against a specific race or people based on specific attributes (usually skin color). Martin Luther King Jr. told us to look at content of character, not skin color. Let’s start discerning whether a comment or opinion is based on the behavior and character of a person rather than their skin color.
The irony being that the Left can’t seem to see real racism when it’s right in front of them: voting for a candidate purely based on skin color, hating white men, encouraging benefits and programs that only apply to people of a specific ethnic background or skin color, etc.
Satanist/Satanic
It is true, we face evil in this world every day. There are demonic forces at work around us that constantly try to distract us, tempt us, mislead us, and encourage us to delight in all that is wrong, distorted, disgusting, perverted, and dark. But not everything is satanic and not everyone is a satanist. I’ve seen this phrase/word used for everything from abortion (which is justified and true) to a video that looked altered and the people who posted it (not justified).
This one is directed at the conservatives and right-wingers in the room. We bandy this term about quite a bit and for good reason: it does indeed feel like everything we see and hear is satanic. However, I think we need to practice some discernment here. Can people believe, say, and do evil things? Absolutely. They are human, of course they (like the rest of us) will harbor vain thoughts and evil imaginations. But we need to look at our brothers and sisters, made in the image of Christ, and acknowledge, while what they say might be wrong and evil, they themselves are not satan incarnate.
We are commanded to love our enemies and forgive those who hate us. When we see evil, let’s shy away from it and pray for those who are putting these ideas forward and behaving in ways that do not align with their God-given nature. But let’s save the satanic/satanist labels for the things are truly of that dark world of despair and pain.
You Are Not A Fascist
In conclusion, when you hear that word thrown around, rely on your own discretion, the evidence of your eyes, and the actions and behaviors of the person being called a fascist to guide you in whether or not you believe it. Your love of family, God, and country does not make you a fascist. It makes you a God-fearing patriot. Your desire to see your country thrive, evil banished, and Truth reign does not make you a fascist. So carry on, work towards the good, true, and beautiful. Keep your chin up and your moral compass calibrated. And remember, words have meaning, it matters.
