American Maid: A Non-Toxic Revolution, One Small Step at a Time

“If you’re all about supporting small, independent family businesses and stepping away from big-box stores and corporate giants, we’re a perfect match.” And who isn’t all about the small businesses, these days? As Americans and moms, we want that disconnect from the big, mobster-like companies that never put a single thought into their products or the people who use them. These faceless organizations only have one threat: the mom and pop. The American-made that makes our lives easier and answers a common household need as well as our desire to banish the toxins, and keep supporting our neighbors.

So we went to the source: American Maid. This lovely, family-owned company is tackling the household cleaning industry one non-toxic product at a time, giving Americans an alternative that works. We had the honor of interviewing their founder and owner, Kerry, to find the why behind American Maid and chat about the small steps and big changes taking the American home by storm.

First things first, give us your elevator pitch for convincing a life-long Clorox user to switch to your products!

If someone’s still using Clorox, they might not quite be ready for American Maid—and that’s okay! Our brand is really for moms and families who are ready to make simple, everyday  changes toward a non-toxic home. With American Maid, you get safe, transparent, and effective cleaning products that you can feel good about using around your kids. Plus, if you’re all about supporting small, independent family businesses and stepping away from big-box stores and corporate giants, we’re a perfect match.

American Maid found its start during the COVID pandemic in 2020. “Everything felt overwhelming, and people were doom-scrolling without any real solutions in sight.” Kerry admits that cleaning wasn’t the solution to COVID, but it gave her and her family something to focus on in those stressful days when we were all trying to figure out how to move forward and find purpose. It was their way to push back against the “massive corporations dominating the $1 billion cleaning industry.”

“We believe those shelves should hold products from American families, not faceless corporations.”

According to Kerry, American Maid’s “why” is simple: “we want to make it easy for families to switch to non-toxic, family-made products. That’s why our starter kit is designed to handle almost every cleaning need—from floors to laundry—without ever stepping into a bigbox store. It’s about taking back control, supporting families, and making better choices, one small step at a time.”

Small, Practical Changes

Helping Americans make ”small, practical changes” is right there on the front page of American Maid’s website. All the shifts needed in order to live healthier can turn into deafening white noise around us and cause more stress than anything else. But we’re joining Kerry to say, “Don’t sweat it!” The name of the game is small, practical changes and easing into the non-toxic life.

“There’s definitely been an awakening,” Kerry says, “with more people wanting to make their homes non-toxic—but you can’t change everything overnight. That’s why we designed our starter kit to make it easy. It shows up at your door and lets you replace so many cleaners at once, making those small, daily changes feel doable.

Maybe you start with our kit today, then tomorrow you’re swapping out food dyes, and next week you’re making your own bread. Before you know it, you’re homeschooling your kids, raising chickens, and questioning the moon landing 😉.”

The American Maid goal is to make your transition to non-toxic as easy as possible.

“With just one box, you’re cutting out toxins, hormone disruptors, and synthetic fragrances, embracing sustainability with refillable bottles, and supporting an American family business instead of a faceless corporation. Small steps really do add up.”

We love the bottles your products come in – is part of your goal as a company to combat throw-away culture in America?

We put a lot of thought into designing our bottles, drawing from vintage inspiration to create something functional and beautiful. My husband, a designer, helped bring it all to life—and he always jokes that I’m his “easiest client” 🙃. We noticed a trend of people buying pretty bottles to leave out on their sinks, so we designed ours to meet that need while keeping our mission in mind. With our system, you get a set of stylish bottles and our concentrate, which makes several cleaners. When you run out, you just buy another concentrate to refill them—no need to toss the bottles. It’s practical, sustainable, and looks great in your home.

What does American-made mean to you?

To us, “American-made” means supporting hardworking American family businesses. It’s about choosing the baker who runs her business out of her home or the farmer raising livestock an hour away. It might take a little more effort, but those choices improve the quality of what you bring into your home and help keep family businesses alive.

The truth is, these businesses exist, but they don’t have the massive marketing budgets of big corporations. Families like ours are working late nights, balancing full-time jobs, homeschooling, and shipping products out of our garage to get what we make into people’s hands. We don’t have million-dollar ad campaigns—just a lot of heart and determination. When you support American family businesses, you’re helping real people succeed and keeping your dollars out of corporate pockets. It’s a powerful choice.

Tell us about the refills. Why was that something you wanted to make a key part of your company?

I’ve been making my own cleaners for years—everything from vinegar and orange peels to lemon juice and baking soda. I’ve tried it all. But when I came up with this refill system, I wanted to make it simple for families to create their own non-toxic cleaners without having to figure out the how, why, or what on their own.

We put a lot of thought into the bottles, the designs, and the ratios to create a system that’s easy to use and lets you reuse beautiful bottles over and over. It’s about making cleaning simple, sustainable, and accessible—all while supporting an American family business.

It’s Easier Than Ever To Take Small Steps

More and more companies are directing their focus to cleaner products, and small businesses especially are making it their mission.

Tell us about the starter kit!

Our starter kit gives you everything you need to switch to non-toxic cleaning with ease. At the heart of it is our American Maid Solution concentrate, which makes all your cleaners. The kit includes bottles for bathroom, general, and glass sprays, each designed to use different ratios of the concentrate for the perfect cleaning power.

I even use the foaming soap to do my dishes—I just put it on a brush, and it works beautifully. Our signature scent, Prairie Wood, is something we designed ourselves to capture the feeling of walking through a wild flower field in a mountain valley.

This kit gives you months of products: 64 loads of laundry, three foaming soaps, three glass sprays, three bathroom sprays, and three general sprays. When you run out, just grab another concentrate to refill and keep going. It’s sustainable, practical, and made for families.

“When you support American family businesses, you’re helping real people succeed and keeping your dollars out of corporate pockets. It’s a powerful choice.”

American-Made & MAHA

Are you excited for the MAHA movement?

I’m really excited about the MAHA movement. I’ve been a big fan of RFK for years, and it’s amazing to see America waking up to a healthier way of living. I can’t wait to see where it goes. This is why I’m so happy to be part of this movement with everyone—raising awareness about what we’re putting into our bodies, the food we buy, and the impact of big corporations.

Pharma and big food are like cartels, working together to keep us unhealthy because they profit from it. But we’re here to stop that and offer a better choice. The MAHA movement is truly inspiring, and it ties directly into our mission. It’s about giving people the power to make healthier decisions and change the world one choice at a time.

What is something that would make American-made so much easier for small retailers like you?

I think we could make it easier if more people made a point to seek out small businesses and choose to buy from them. It’s really up to us as Americans—if we want American-made products to stay here, we need to support those businesses. Find them, buy from them, and help make them successful. When we do that, we’re strengthening family businesses and making them the Backbone of our communities, states, and country. That’s how we take the power back from corporations and make a real difference.

It sounds obvious, but social media is one of the best ways to help give small businesses a platform. Share their posts, spread the word, and support their products—it doesn’t take much, but it can make all the difference in getting them seen and helping them grow.

Beyond shopping, how can we support family-owned businesses in America?

Beyond shopping, supporting family-owned businesses is about being intentional. Look at labels and be mindful of what you’re bringing into your home. The things you choose to bring into your space carry an energy, and that energy affects everything living there. When you buy from an American family that made your product with love and prioritized quality over profit, your family feels the benefit—it’s a small but powerful way to create a healthier, more meaningful home.

Social media is another great way to support family businesses. Share their posts, reels, and products—even if it’s not something you need, someone in your circle might love it. A simple share could get their name in front of the right person. These small businesses don’t have the massive marketing budgets that corporations do—they rely on word of mouth and their social media presence to grow. By sharing their work, you’re giving them the platform they need to reach more people and thrive.

American Maid & The Future

What’s next? Where do you see American Maid in five or ten years?

We have big plans for American Maid and are so excited about the future. Our Starter Kit  launched just a few months ago, and the response has been incredible. We’re focused on getting that product into as many American homes as possible.

At our core, we want to help American families take small steps to eliminate toxins and shop more American-made products. Our roadmap is full of solutions designed to make those changes easier and more beautiful. We plan to keep growing and offering even more ways to help our customers live healthier, more intentional lives.

Can we have a sneak peek at what products are coming soon?

While we can’t give away any hints just yet, we do have a handful of products in development that we absolutely love. They’re designed to align with our core values—helping families make small, meaningful changes toward eliminating toxins and choosing American-made products. We’re putting the same thought and care into these new additions as we did with our starter kit, and we can’t wait to share them with you when the time is right!

When we come across a product like American Maid, we just have to share it with our audience. Together, we can take the small steps needed to create healthier homes and families that don’t rely on the corporations or American government. We can raise up our neighbors, keep our communities flourishing and growing, and build a marketplace of alternatives that make reaching our healthy-home goals achievable.
